when I create a group, I can’t tell when I’m waiting for the student list if it is just slow or if the group is actually 0. Sometimes the group is 0, but it is hard to know if there should be names and it’s timing out, or if it is actually 0.

When you create a group, don't you click "View Group" which takes you directly to the group results? Only when copying do you immediately see Unavailable or a number, but it should match the group you copied.
I guess I've just never had this issue...
